About the Summer Academy

What is the Summer Academy?

The PATH Summer Academy is a free 5-week academic transition program for transfer students accepted into UC San Diego with a major under the School of Arts and Humanities.

The program prepares transfer students for success at the university by providing experience with academic coursework, outlining available resources and fostering a strong community of support. Students exit the program ready to excel in their first quarter on campus!

Eligible Participants

  • Transfer students, accepted into UC San Diego and planning to attend, with a declared major that falls under the School of Arts and Humanities.
  • Students must be transferring from City, Mesa or Miramar Community Colleges (due to the grant funding partnership with the SDCCD), though additional grant funding has allowed for a limited number of students from outside those community colleges.
  • The program typically accepts up to 30 students.

Program Components

Participants participate in classes, workshops, mentoring and activities Monday-Thursday during the 5-week program. The main components include:

  • ACADEMIC COURSEWORK
    • All students in the program take the same course(s), regardless of their individual major, earning credits towards graduation. The classes are typically held Monday-Thursday, and often involve field trips, scheduled during class times. The classes are 5-weeks long and fast-pace.
  • WEEKLY WORKSHOPS
    • Students attend workshops that highlight campus resources and professional development opportunities. The workshops are typically held immediately before or after class.
  • WEEKLY PEER MENTOR MEETINGS
    • Students are assigned a peer mentor (a current UC San Diego student formerly in the program) and are required to meet individually with their mentor each week to ask questions, take tours and get further information and support.
  • OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES
    • The peer mentors host a variety of optional activities, like study sessions, game nights, outings and more. These activities help the cohort get to know each other in a more relaxed setting.

Time and Location

  • As the name suggests, the program occurs in the summer and is held during the UC San Diego Summer Session 2, which is typically during the month of August and beginning of September, immediately proceeding a student's first quarter at UC San Diego.
  • The Summer Academy typically plans classes and activities Monday through Thursday, and students should expect to participate in either class or workshops on each of these days.
  • The program is held in-person on the beautiful UC San Diego campus in La Jolla. Some classes and activities may be offered remotely, though attendees are expected to participate in person for most.

Cost

  •  THE PROGRAM IS COMPLETELY FREE thanks to a generous grant from program supporters.
  • Admission to the program includes:
    • Tuition for the summer course(s)
    • Course textbooks and any supplies
    • Complimentary activities (Kayaking, Field trips, etc.)
